Kirstin Chávez

Background: Born in Albuquerque (New Mexico). Spent her formative years in Kuala Lumpur, where her parents worked as English and Music teachers at the International School. Studied at New Mexico State University graduating with a Bachelor of Music, and the Eastman School of Music completing a Master of Music Degree.

Engagements/Australia: Title role in Carmen (Opera Australia), Jo in Little Women (Pacific Opera).

International: Has made Carmen her signature role, performing it to great acclaim in productions in Japan, China, Taiwan, Europe, Canada and throughout the USA. Other engagements include Maddalena in Rigoletto (The Metropolitan Opera, Dallas Opera, San Diego Opera, New York City Opera, Opera Company of Philadelphia), Sister Helen Prejean in Dead Man Walking (Tulsa Opera), Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia (San Diego Opera, Santa Fe Opera, Indianapolis Opera, Orlando Opera, Opéra de Nice), Dorabella in Così fan tutte (Orlando Opera, Connecticut Opera, Oper Graz), title role in La Cenerentola (Kentucky Opera, Fresno Opera), Desideria in The Saint of Bleecker Street (Central City Opera), Octavian in Der Rosenkavalier (Florentine Opera), Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro (New York City Opera, Opera Company of Philadelphia), Hansel in Hansel and Gretel (Atlanta Opera), Orfeo in Orfeo ed Euridice, Sondra Finchley in An American Tragedy (The Metropolitan Opera), Preziosilla in La forza del destino (Caramoor Festival in New York), Thérèse in Thérèse Raquin (San Diego Opera).

Concert repertoire: Handel’s Messiah, Mozart’s Requiem, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, Bach’s Magnificat, Rossini’s Stabat Mater. Engagements include performing Baba the Turk in a concert production of The Rake’s Progress (with Cincinnati Chamber Orchestra), performing at the Meadow Brook Music Festival (with Detroit Symphony Orchestra), performing Manuel de Falla’s El amor brujo at the Wintergreen Performing Arts Festival.
