Project Puccini is a world-first initiative by Opera Queensland, which gives hundreds of Queenslanders the opportunity to perform in the chorus of a brand new production of Puccini's La bohème.

36 adults and 12 children from Mount Isa have now been chosen to form a local chorus to sing in Italian and act alongside OperaQ’s principal artists and musicians from Queensland Symphony Orchestra in a professionally staged opera.

OperaQ is delighted with the initial response to Project Puccini, the nearly 800 enthusiastic singers who auditioned across the state and the quality of the singing we heard in Mount Isa. The successful participants were chosen by the auditioning panel because they demonstrated strong vocal ability, aptitude for language and stage presence during the audition process.

After a 10-week development program, the Mount Isa Chorus is amidst final preparations before taking to the stage in La bohème at the Mount Isa Civic Centre on 4 September.

Project Puccini is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland’s Playing Queensland Fund, and is also supported by the Graeme Wood Foundation. Thanks to the generous support of Mount Isa Mines, Mount Isa school students will also be treated to a special performance of La bohème and teachers will receive professional development opportunities.

The project aims to equip participants with improved music and drama skills, new social and creative networks, and an increased sense of community and wellbeing.

Project Puccini in Mount Isa is also proudly supported by the Regional Arts Development Fund.
